Field Hockey - Latrobe vs Hempfield

Hempfield Field Hockey holds off late charge by Latrobe to secure a 4-3 victory.

Hempfield senior Amara Forsyth scored twice as she led the Spartans past Latrobe in a 4-3 victory during their WPIAL Field Hockey contest at Rossi Field on Monday night September 20, 2021 in Latrobe.

Latrobe honored the seniors from both teams at the beginning of the evening's non-conference game.

Latrobe junior Lauren Sapp started the scoring on the night when she scored on Hempfield senior goalie Shannon Lutz only three minutes into the contest played amidst strong winds and beneath a full moon.

A little more than a minute later Hempfield's Forsyth scored her first goal of the night on Latrobe senior goalie Valentina Rossi knotting the score at one.

Hempfield senior Delphine Vandael continued the scoring when she added a goal at the nine minute mark of the opening period giving the visiting Spartans a 2-1 advantage.

Spartan senior Ashlyn Radocaj then scored with one minute left in the first period giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead heading into the second period of play.

Both teams' defenses clamped down on the scoring and played a scoreless second period.

Hempfield took a 3-1 lead into the halftime intermission.

Hempfield senior Amara Forsyth opened the second half scoring at the 2 1/2 minute mark when she added her second goal of the evening giving Hempfield a commanding lead.

The Wildcats refused to give up and stormed their way back with two goals in the second half to make the contest interesting.

The first of those two goals was scored by senior Meghan Henderson at the end of the third period and the other by junior Megan Brackney in the fourth period.

Hempfield goalie Shannon Lutz held off the late charge by the Wildcats and the Spartans secured a 4-3 victory.

Hempfield improved their record to 3-2-1 and will battle Taylor Allderdice next on their schedule. Latrobe fell to 2-2 and will take on Norwin this Saturday.
